2011 Giorgio Primo
Black cherries, plums, smoke, tar, graphite and spices all burst from the glass in the 2011 Giorgio Primo. Rich, voluptuous and intense, the 2011 impresses for its seamless personality. A rich, super-ripe, full-throttle finish rounds things out in style. Today the 2011 is showing remarkably well, considering it was just bottled one week ago. The 2011 is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot.

2011 La Massa
The 2011 La Massa is drop-dead gorgeous. Blackberry jam, melted road tar, violets, licorice and cloves form the core in this deep, powerful rendering of the estate’s entry-level wine. In 2011, La Massa overachieves with a rich, intense red that will blow away the vast majority of the higher-end offerings in Tuscany. This is an absolutely joyous wine from Giampaolo Motta, and one of the best values anywhere in the world. Can the Giorgio Primo be that much better? The answer, as I recently found out, is yes. The blend is 60% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot with a dollop of Alicante. In 2011, heat spikes at the end of the harvest penalized Merlot, hence its lower presence in the blend in 2011, while the more resistant Cabernet plays a greater role. Sage, rosemary and lavender linger on the finish.

2010 Giorgio Primo

The 2010 Giorgio Primo possesses stunning richness and power. A deep, concentrated wine, the 2010 emerges from the glass with layered black fruit, melted rocks, licorice, graphite and menthol. Frankly, this is a difficult wine to taste alongside other wines from Chianti Classico because the reference points are necessarily from somewhere else: the great wines of Bordeaux. The 2010 brings together all the best elements of the house style. The 2010 is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot.
